One of a handful of films that were rescued from the demolition rubble following a fire at the engineering dept building at Exeter St Davids. We have cleaned and repaired these survivors and are now making telecine copies for posting online. We are reliably informed that the carriage used in the film is in preservation at Buckfastliegh. If you can tell us anything about the film we would be plea...
Great little piece of film, not great best quality (!) sound but I don't care. This shows just how much work went in to maintaining the thousands of miles of railway in the UK at that time - before they were ripped up in the 1960's modernisation. I think there were only a small number of different designs of tracklayer machine on BR in the 1950's, so much renewals work was still undertaken by heavy manpower with continuous welded rail yet to become common too. Even this new machine still isn't fully powered, the jibs need to be to be wound out by hand and the unit needs a loco to move it around.....Love these old instructional films, they look at so many of the behind the scenes activities that were relied upon but taken for granted, though there's no H&S or proper PPE anywhere to be seen. The narrator makes it sound as if the job shown here used groundbreaking methods and in quite a few ways, post-WW2 Britain, it would have been with that machine. Recognise Newlands Prefab Depot (long gone) near Malvern, Worcestershire and one of the purpose-built PWM diesel shunters used on these relaying jobs around the Western Region of BR. Logo on the screen doesn't bother me, it's the old piece of film that's important, the characters involved, details of how the track was pre-assembled, how the job was undertaken on site (while locals were seemingly at Sunday church....), etc, etc. There are several other BTF films on this subject worth watching, logos or not.
Now a machine does this crazy
great video, but PLEASE lose the watermark!, it is very distracting, we Already know who you are!, and it is right in the center of the picture!, stupid, not a good restoration at all, esp. with the hissing, like it was from a speaker of a movie projector.
You can see a better quality version of this with the CineStar titles across the screen. Do they own the rights to this BTF film? ruclips.net/video/RjpYcYgaOCI/видео.html
Great piece of documentary showing early tamping/lining machines and the men on the PWay. The audio sounds like the Daleks and Soup Dragon together, can't make out any of the narration whatsoever unfortunately, it is really garbled.
Having the LARGE watermark smack in the middle of the screen really irritated me; a damn shame, because the film itself would be well worth watching.
Agreed!
You need to reverse the polarity of either the left or right audio channel otherwise anyone listening in mono will hear nothing.
Logo in the middle of the screen? give me a break !!!! Better version here >> ruclips.net/video/RjpYcYgaOCI/видео.html
Stupid logo.👎👎👎
You make a video and then put a great big logo in the middle of the screen. Not in a million years would I look or subscribe.🤮🤮🤮
Indian p way system is still working like this
Brilliant film, I joined BR in 83, I do agree with the comment about the watermark detracting where it is though, but fascinating to watch, thank you.
The righting on the screen is very distracting, other than that very good.👍🏻
Would like better without watermark, or a bit more discrete. Wouldn't mind a DVD as well, spent most of my career at St Davids and saw a few of these films for training.
As an Ex TK Engineer, the audio track needs some noise reduction and get rid of the AGC. The quality of the film stock is very good. Put that logo in the safe area why not.
What sort of cvnt takes public domain videos and watermarks them like they own them? The CineStarVisuals sort of cvnt.
Desperate advertising constitutes vandalism.
Forgive my ignorance, but is that asbestos being used as a packing/adhesive at 8:20?
That was my first thought, it sure looked like it, and they used that stuff for everything.
I didn’t watch it because of the dopey logo
Pubic Domain film, so it is illegal to put ANY type of copyright identification on the film. "In the Public Domain" means just that dummy!
Was the narrator in a barrel 😆
Shocking sound quality! Why bother posting it!!!
Loose the logo
Here's part II and no visual logo: Day to Day Track Maintenance: Part 2: Switches and Crossings (1952)
Downvoted due to stupid logo in the middle of the screen.
Back when “chair” was pronounced “cheeeaaaiiirrre” Luvleee
Very interesting, stupid writing through the middle of the video, if the reason for the writing is for us to take note of the company, do t worry I’ve noted it and made sure I never use them
What's wrong with a small watermark in the corner of the screen!
Downvote logo indeed 👎ridiculous.
I want to be a railroad horn blower.
The logo is idiot
Lose the logo.
Nice crappy video
Beschissener kann mann das Logo auch echt nicht setzen. Aus Genuss wird Mist.
Evident that the taxpayers were on the hook from the number of men employed.
The logo spoils it, but still worth watching
Logo positioned by a complete idiot.
Different times no lookouts makes me nervous! I don't know whether they do measured packing now and I've never seen a monument block. Great film showing the history of the railways.
barry uk when I started on the railway in 1982, we used to use LO’s but only if necessary or if there was a green card in the gang. I remember working up Whiteball tunnel near wellington when I first started, the Guys always used to take green guys there, we used to have an advance lo at the tunnel mouth and one on site, the trains where doing a. Ton and when they passed it was literally only 2 ft from me with my back against the tunnel wall. The good old days, I used to love it
you dont own the film so why is you stupid logo there. hope your not making profit off it
adding the logo as a watermark could be a copyright infringement I'd have thought as it could still be covered by the original rights? As somebody else has commented that they have the same video the watermark seems pointless? It really devalues the video so much
Remove the useless water-mark, it ruins the video entirely. No like!!!
Only reason people are complaining about the Logo is because they can't copy it and claim it as there own.
You have an attitude with your logo. ruins a possibly good video. The old film also needs some love, care and maintenance like the video is trying to teach. Get rid of the NOISE.
This film seems to be hijacked and presented cinestar visuals preview. If only we could watch something without the bloody advert.
Could be a good video, but the logo blocks many important things from being seen. Goodby, JIM
Ruined by your stupid logo......
Watermark (as per all this idiots uploads) and over-driven audio spoils enjoyment of video.
Interesting how many different systems have been developed to connect the rails to the ties/sleepers not only in the UK but also around the world during the 20th century. Chairs, plates, screws, bolts, spikes, springs etc. Of course some variation is due to different demands in terms of traffic intensity and the development of the ratio between labour cost and materials cost. Given the huge technical and economical importance, a universal best solution would probably have been found long ago if such a solution existed. With welded rails and concrete sleepers nowadays, it seems the solution converges towards some type of elastic steel bracket and a relativly simple plate between sleeper and rail.
The good old days of true British Railways
wont watch any more of your self trashed videos
